Getting started with AI alt text
The AI Alt Text screen writes Alternative Text for images in your Media Library that don't have any yet. You can edit every description before or after it's saved.
Open the screen
- Install and activate Dirigible AI Alt Text.
- In the WordPress admin, go to Dirigible → AI Alt Text.
Add your API key
Under API Configuration, choose OpenRouter (the default) or OpenAI.
- Paste your OpenRouter API Key or OpenAI API Key. A key entered here isn't saved, so you'll paste it again next time.
- If a key is already saved for the whole site, the screen says so and you can skip this.
- Leave Model on the recommended default unless you have a reason to change it.
Your provider bills your account for each description. To save a key for the whole site, go to Dirigible → AI / OpenRouter and fill in OpenRouter API Key. Automatic alt text on upload only works with a saved site key.
Generate your first description
- Check that Images Without Alt Text lists some photos.
- On one image, click Generate Alt Text, then Save Alt Text.
- Or click Generate All Alt Text to write and save descriptions for every image on the list at once.
Nothing waits for approval: saved descriptions go live right away. More detail is in Generate missing alt text.
