Getting started

Create a mega menu

  1. In the WordPress admin, go to Mega Menus β†’ Add New Mega Menu
  2. Give it a title β€” that title is the default label in the navigation
  3. Edit the starter blocks, or replace them
  4. Publish

New mega menus start with a full-width Section and a Structured List set to Naked, Grid, and 3 columns, with six empty List Cards. Change those settings or swap in other blocks. The starter layout is a suggestion, not a lock.

A mega menu has no public page of its own. Visitors and search engines cannot open it as a URL. It only appears when you add it to a menu that is assigned to a location.

Add it to a menu

  1. Go to Appearance β†’ Menus
  2. Open the Mega Menus box (it stays visible on this screen)
  3. Check the mega menu and click Add to Menu
  4. Place the item where you want it in the header or mobile menu
  5. Save the menu and assign it to a location if it is not already

You can add the same mega menu to more than one menu. Desktop and mobile items that point at the same mega menu share one panel.

How it behaves on the site

  • Clicking the nav item opens or closes the panel. It does not follow a link.
  • Opening one mega menu closes any other that is open.
  • Clicking outside the item and the panel closes it.
  • On small screens, the open panel fills the space under the header and the drawer hides the other menu items.
  • The item shows a caret; it becomes an X while the panel is open.

Tips

  • Keep the panel short enough to scan β€” a three-column list of links is the usual pattern.
  • Use the Section background if you need a color or image behind the links.
  • Put the same mega menu on the desktop and mobile menus instead of duplicating the content.
