Import & Export
Overview
Aircraft → Import & Export moves your fleet in and out of the site:
- Import a spreadsheet of aircraft to add several at once, or to update speeds, ranges, passenger counts, baggage and amenities across the fleet.
- Export your aircraft as a spreadsheet (CSV) to edit or keep, or as a JSON file to copy them to another Dirigible site.
You can also get there from the Import and Export buttons at the top of the Aircraft list. You need an Editor or Administrator account. Importing also needs permission to upload files, because featured images are downloaded into the Media Library.
Export
- Go to Aircraft → Import & Export and stay on the Export tab.
- Choose Spreadsheet (CSV) to open the file in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets, or JSON to import it on another Dirigible site.
- Turn on Include drafts and private ones if you want those too.
- Select Download export file.
Import a spreadsheet
The quickest start is Download a blank spreadsheet on the Export tab: it has every column with the right header. Or export your aircraft, edit them, and import them back.
- Fill in one row per aircraft. Only Title is required.
- Save it as CSV (in Excel: File → Save As → CSV UTF-8) and drop it on the Import tab.
- Check the preview. Every row says New, Update (naming what changes), Skip or Error, and you can untick any of them.
- Select Import. Keep the page open until it finishes. If it's interrupted, open the page again and select Resume import.
Columns
| Column | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Title | The aircraft's name, like Hawker 750. |
| Speed, Range (Distance), Range (Time), Passengers | Numbers only: miles per hour, miles, hours and seats, like 520, 2,100, 5.5, 8. A cell that isn't a number is flagged in the preview. |
| Baggage Info (Text) | The baggage description, like "Four large roller boards…". |
| Large Rollers, Medium Rollers, Duffels, Golf Clubs, Max Weight | The numbers for the baggage graphic. Max Weight is in pounds. |
| Amenities | Names separated by ` |
| Content | The aircraft's description. Line breaks are kept. |
| Hero Image, Cabin Layout Image | The web address of an image that's already in this site's Media Library. Copy it from the image's File URL in the Media Library. An address from anywhere else is left out, and the preview tells you: upload the image, then pick it in the editor. |
| Aircraft Categories | The category's name, like Midsize Jets. A name the site doesn't have yet is added. |
| Featured Image | The web address of a photo. It's downloaded into the Media Library. An image already in this site's Media Library is reused. |
| Featured Image alt text | Describes the photo for screen readers. |
| Excerpt | The short introduction shown beside the specs. |
| Order | A number, for fleets shown in a custom order. |
| Status | Published, Draft, Pending or Private. |
| Slug | The last part of the aircraft's web address. Leave it out to have it made from the title. |
Column headers can be in any case, and a small typo is fine: the preview tells you how each header was read, and lists any it ignored.
Updating aircraft that are already on the site
A row updates an existing aircraft when it has the same web address (Slug), then the same title. The preview shows which aircraft each row matched.
Only what's in the spreadsheet changes. An empty cell never clears anything, so you can import a sheet with just titles and new speeds. Updated aircraft keep their status and web address.
What isn't imported or exported
- Available Aircraft: the individual planes with their photo galleries. Their photos can't be matched from one site to another, so add them in the editor.
- Example Flights: no page shows them.
- An aircraft category's own details (range, speed, passengers, images and gallery). Only its name travels: when an import adds a new category, go to Aircraft → Aircraft Categories afterwards and fill them in.
- The page options in the aircraft's sidebar and its SEO title and description.
Copy aircraft to another Dirigible site
Export as JSON on one site and import the file on the other. It carries each aircraft's specs, baggage, amenities, content, excerpt, featured image and category. Featured images are downloaded from the site the file came from, so that site needs to be online. Hero and cabin layout images aren't: pick them in the editor on the new site.
Undo an import
When an import finishes, select Undo this import. It deletes the aircraft it added, the images it downloaded and the categories it added, and puts every aircraft it updated back exactly as it was. Anything edited after the import is left as it is. Undo stays available for 7 days.
