Usage

The People block queries person posts and renders them as a Directory, Headshots grid, Blocks layout, or Minimal list. Choose who to show — all people, a People Category, or a handpicked set — and optionally add category filter pills for visitors.

Real-world example

UW–Madison Division of Continuing Studies — Directory uses a People block with:

  • Display set to Directory with a multi-column grid
  • Enable Filtering on, with Filter Categories set to department terms (Academic Affairs, Badger Precollege, Continuing Education, etc.)
  • A Show All pill plus one pill per category so visitors can narrow the faculty and staff list
  • Each card: headshot (featured image), linked name, and job title from the person sidebar

A featured dean or leader at the top of the page can use a separate Person block instead of the main directory query.

Content

  • Populate By — Show All (default), By Category, or Handpicked
  • Categories — when By Category is selected, pick which categories to include
  • Handpicked — when Handpicked is selected, search and add specific people

Appearance

  • Display — Directory (default), Headshots, Blocks, or Minimal
  • Columns — 1–6 per row (default 3)
  • Border Radius — circle, rounded, or square crop when Display is Headshots
  • Name Style / Title Style — Customizer typography presets
  • Hide Title / Hide Excerpt — suppress the block section heading or intro copy
  • Enable Filtering — show category filter pills (great for large org directories)
  • Filter Categories — which categories appear as filter options
  • Labels — text, icon, or no labels on filter pills
  • Fields to Display — optional phone, email, address, social links on each card

Tips

  • Use People Categories for departments or teams; pair with Enable Filtering for self-service browsing.
  • Match Name Style to your page hierarchy — h4 or h5 works well in dense directories.
  • Leave Fields to Display minimal on card grids; link to single person pages for full contact info.
