Turn on automatic alt text for new uploads

With automatic alt text on, each new image upload gets Alternative Text written for it in the background. It only fills empty fields, so alt text you've already written stays put. It doesn't touch images already in the library. For those, see Generate alt text for the media library.

Save an OpenRouter key for the site

Automatic alt text needs a key saved to the site. A key you type on the AI Alt Text screen only lasts for that visit.

  1. Go to Dirigible → AI / OpenRouter.
  2. Enter your OpenRouter API Key and save.

Turn on Automatic Generation

  1. Go to Dirigible → AI Alt Text.
  2. Under Automatic Generation, check Automatically generate alt text when images are uploaded.
  3. Leave Model on the recommended option unless you have a reason to change it.
  4. Upload a test image. Alternative Text should fill in after a short wait.

Uncheck the box to turn it off.
