Generate alt text for the media library
Dirigible AI Alt Text writes image alt text for every photo in your media library that doesn't have any yet. For what good alt text looks like, see Writing alt text for images. Full plugin walkthrough: Generate missing alt text.
Generate missing alt text
- Go to Dirigible → AI Alt Text.
- Under API Configuration, choose OpenRouter or OpenAI. If the site doesn't already have a saved OpenRouter key, enter your OpenRouter API Key or OpenAI API Key. Don't have a key yet? See Add an OpenRouter AI key.
- Leave Model on the recommended option unless you have a reason to change it.
- Under Images Without Alt Text, pick one:
- Generate All Alt Text writes and saves a description for every image in the list.
- Generate Alt Text on a single image fills in a draft. Edit it if you like, then click Save Alt Text.
A single-image draft isn't saved until you click Save Alt Text. Generate All Alt Text saves as it goes.
After a big run
- Click Refresh List to update what's still missing.
- Check the important images, like heroes and product photos. See Review and edit AI alt text.
- To cover future uploads, turn on automatic alt text for new uploads.
