Make bulleted and numbered lists
Lists make steps, features, and options easy to scan. Use a numbered list when order matters, like steps or a ranking, and a bulleted list when it doesn't.
Start a list
On an empty line in the editor, do one of these:
- Type
-(a dash and a space) to start a bulleted list, or1.to start a numbered one. - Type
/listand press Enter. - Click + and choose List.
Press Enter for each new item. Press Enter twice at the end of the list to get back to a normal paragraph.
Switch between bullets and numbers
- Click in the list, then click Select parent block at the left end of the toolbar so the whole list is selected.
- In the toolbar, click Unordered for bullets or Ordered for numbers.
Indent and outdent items
To nest an item under the one above it, put the cursor in the item and press Tab, or click Indent in its toolbar. Shift+Tab or Outdent moves it back out.
Change how numbers count
Select a numbered list and open the block sidebar. You can:
- Change List style to letters or Roman numerals.
- Set Start value to continue numbering from an earlier list, for example starting at 4.
- Turn on Reverse order to count down, for a top-ten list.
Paste a list from somewhere else
Text pasted from Word or Google Docs usually becomes a List block on its own. If it lands as a paragraph with typed dashes, select the paragraph, click the block's icon at the left of its toolbar, and choose List. To avoid stray formatting, see the tip in Fix "This block contains unexpected or invalid content".
If your site runs on Dirigible
Dirigible adds bullet styles to the List block. Select the list and choose one in the Styles panel of the block sidebar:
| Style | Looks like |
|---|---|
| Checkmarks, Circle Checks, Badges | A tick beside each item, for features and benefits |
| Crosses | A red cross, for "not included" lists |
| Carets, Chevrons, Arrows | A pointer, for links and next steps |
| Hang Bullets | Normal bullets that hang in the margin, so the text lines up with paragraphs above and below |
| Naked | No bullets and no indent |
The icon styles are designed for bulleted lists. They use your text color, except Crosses, which uses the Failure color from your palette (red unless you've changed it).
For a grid of features or services where each item has its own icon, headline, and short text, use the Icon List block instead.
