Add a page title (H1) to every page

Every page should have one visible H1 heading near the top that says what the page is about. In the WordPress block editor, add a Heading block and set it to H1, or add a Title block (called Post Title in older versions) and set its level to H1 in the block toolbar, since it starts as H2. Whether your theme also shows the page's title on its own depends on the theme, so check the live page.

On a Dirigible site, pages and posts handle this differently.

Pages: add the H1 yourself

A page shows only the blocks you add. Nothing adds a title for you, so put an H1 at the top with one of these:

  • A Hero block, whose headline is an H1 by default.
  • A Title block (Post Title in older versions) set to H1.
  • A Heading block set to H1.
  • A Columns layout with an H1 heading next to an image.

The title field at the top of the editor names the page in the dashboard and menus and sets its web address. It doesn't show on the page unless you add a Post Title block.

Posts: a title is added when you need one

If a post doesn't start with a Hero, Hero Slider, or Post Title block, Dirigible adds a title section at the top that shows the post title and the featured image, if the post has one.

Start the post with a Hero, Hero Slider, or Post Title block and Dirigible leaves the top to you.

Tips

  • Use one H1 per page, then H2s and H3s for the sections below it. See Structure a page with headings (H1, H2, H3).
  • Keep the H1 near the top, where visitors and search engines look first.
  • If the featured image appears in the automatic title section, set a focal point so the crop stays on the subject.
