Sitemap
A page that lists everything on the site, and keeps itself up to date.
Usage
Sitemap lists the site's content for visitors: pages as a nested list that follows your page parents and order, posts grouped by category (newest first), then each other kind of content the site has, such as events, people or recipes. Each group gets a heading.
Add it to a page (usually one called Sitemap) and publish. There's nothing to fill in: the list comes from the site and updates itself whenever you publish, unpublish, rename, move or delete something.
In the block sidebar under Content, switch off what you don't want listed: Pages, Posts, or Other content, and pick which kinds of other content show. Group posts by category off lists posts in one list, newest first. Category lists adds lists of the categories and tags used by your other content (for example recipe categories). Section headings off removes the group headings.
What it leaves out
The sitemap only lists what visitors can open and search engines are meant to find:
- drafts, private and scheduled content, and anything with a password
- pages and posts with No Index on, or a canonical URL that points somewhere else, in their SEO panel
- pages and posts with Hide from site search on
- kinds of content the site keeps out of search entirely, such as Link in Bio pages
A page whose parent isn't listed moves up under the nearest page that is.
When to use it
Use it for a Sitemap page in the footer menu, or a "Page not found" page, so visitors can see everything the site has in one place. It's separate from the sitemap search engines read (/wp-sitemap.xml), which Dirigible SEO looks after.
Tips
- Content with thousands of entries (an art collection, say) isn't listed one by one: it gets a single link to its own listing page instead.
- On wide screens, simple lists flow into two columns; nested pages and category groups stay in one.
- Pages that used the old WP Sitemap Page plugin's
[wp_sitemap_page]shortcode keep working after that plugin is switched off: they show this block's list, with the content the plugin was set to leave out still left out.
Settings
Content
Lists the site's published pages, nested under their parent pages in the order set by page order, then title.
Lists the site's published posts.
On, posts are grouped under their category, with sub-categories nested inside, and each post appears once, under the category its web address uses. Off, posts are one list, newest first. Shows when Posts is on.
Lists the site's other kinds of public content, such as events, people or recipes, each under its own heading. The checkboxes below it pick which ones show. A kind with thousands of entries gets one link to its own listing page instead.
Adds lists of the categories and tags your other kinds of content use (for example recipe categories), each linking to its page. Only categories and tags with published content show.
Display
Shows a heading over each group (Pages, Posts, and each kind of content). Off, the lists follow each other with no headings.
