Clone

Updated

What it helps you do

Start a new page from one you've already built: the same layout, blocks, featured image and categories, ready to edit. Clone makes a draft copy and opens it in the editor. The original doesn't change.

It's built into the Dirigible theme and works on pages, posts, events, people, portfolio work and the other content Dirigible's plugins add. You don't need a duplicate-post plugin.

Clone something

Any of these makes the copy and opens it:

  • In the list (Pages, Posts, Events…): hover a row and click Clone.
  • In the editor: in the sidebar's Summary panel, click Clone. In the classic editor, it's in the Publish box.
  • While viewing the page on your site: click Clone in the black bar at the top.

What the copy gets

  • Copied: the title, content, excerpt, featured image, template, categories, tags and other groupings, order, parent page, and the item's other details (SEO title and description, event details, a person's details and so on).
  • Not copied: the address (it gets its own when you publish), the publish date, the password, comments and child pages. The copy is a draft, and you're its author.
  • Left out on purpose: links to things only the original should have, such as an event's ticket product, its place in a repeating series, or a bookable's checkout product. The copy gets its own when you publish it.

Things to know

  • The copy has the same title. It shows as a draft in the list; rename it before you publish so the two are easy to tell apart.
  • Unsaved changes aren't copied. Clone copies the last saved version, so save first if you want your latest edits in the copy.
  • Who can clone: anyone who can edit the item and add new ones of that kind, for example Editors and Managers for every page, and Authors for their own posts.
  • Content from other plugins doesn't get Clone. WooCommerce products have WooCommerce's own Duplicate link.
  • Embeds and some styling can drop out of a copy made by someone whose role can't add them, such as an Author: WordPress removes code it doesn't let that role save. Ask an Editor or Administrator to clone those pages.
  • It replaces the Yoast Duplicate Post plugin. Sites that had it switched over on their own: Dirigible deactivated and removed the plugin. Pages you copied with it stay as they are.
  • Rewrite & Republish isn't part of Clone. A site with a Rewrite & Republish copy still waiting to replace its original keeps Yoast Duplicate Post until that copy is published or deleted. To rework a live page, clone it and publish the copy at the original address: see Duplicate a page and publish it later.
  • Installing or activating Yoast Duplicate Post again asks you first. Under Plugins, Dirigible says Clone is built in; Install anyway and Activate anyway still go ahead. While it's active, its links replace Clone, and Dirigible leaves it installed from then on.

Clone a menu

Under Appearance → Menus, pick the menu, then click Clone Menu at the bottom, beside Delete Menu. Dirigible makes a new menu called "

(copy)" and opens it.

  • Copied: every item, in the same order and with the same nesting, plus each item's label, link, title attribute, "open in a new tab", CSS classes, description and the settings plugins add (a Mega Menu item still opens its panel). Automatically add new top-level pages carries over too.
  • Not shown on your site yet: the copy isn't assigned to a display location, so nothing changes for visitors. When it's ready, tick a location under Menu Settings (or use Manage Locations) to swap it in.
  • Save first. Clone Menu copies the last saved version of the menu; items you've added but not saved aren't in the copy.
  • Clone again and the next copy is called "(copy 2)", and so on.
  • Who can clone menus: anyone who can edit menus (Administrators and Managers).
